Enterprise Work Related Learning : Longton High School ‘Embedding Enterprise’ Inset
Teachers from Longton High School & Arts College participated in a specially created INSET programme delivered by Giant Impact.
The subject was ‘Embedding Enterprise’ and teachers were challenged to see ‘Enterprise’ as an integral part of each and every subject area.
The fun programme, part of a morning INSET session, was action-packed and involved all staff members experiencing key elements of a typical Giant Impact Enterprise event. Non-friendship teams of four teachers were set a range of challenges which involved them being both entrepreneurial (taking risks) and enterprising (adapting to change) to win team prizes.
Longton High staff were very competitive and ‘pushed the boundaries of some of the rules’, but got to experience what students experience, when being challenged to work with people they would not normally work with to achieve team objectives.
Bruce Field, Personal Development & Vocational Education Co-ordinator invited Giant Impact to create a tailored programme to illustrate how enterprise might be further embedded in subject areas and also how it fits in with the National Curriculum. The INSET was received enthusiastically by the teaching staff and the feedback was very positive.
“Thanks a lot for today - it definitely was the highlight as people were saying that they wished we had had at least the whole morning!” - Bruce Field
Longton High School & Arts College in Stoke on Trent takes its pupils from an area of considerable social disadvantage. Unemployment is relatively high and the percentage of pupils entitled to free school meals is above the national average. The proportion of pupils who do not have English as their first language is above average and this is increasing as the families of former asylum seekers settle in the area. The main other language is Panjabi, but Urdu, Czech, Latvian and Lithuanian are also spoken. A significant number of pupils enter the school during the year and some of these have little or no English language. Other pupils come from other local schools, many with behaviour and attendance problems. Attainment on entry varies from year to year but is below average and the proportion of pupils with learning difficulties is above average.
