Enterprise Work Related Learning : Students Learning To Learn
Students Learning How They Are Clever
St Michael’s has pioneered an imaginative rolling programme of career, work related learning and enterprise provision and is seeing noticeable improvements in students’ motivation as a result.
Anne Jones, Head of Work Related Learning, has devised an imaginative programme for all year groups (7 to 11), which is helping to embed the key work related learning and enterprise messages and so better equip students for the world of work.
Year 7 are motivated to embrace enterprise and what it means in its broadest sense. All subject teachers are involved in enterprise activities and so enterprise is sustained and reinforced as students move through every year group.
Helping students understand the process of learning was an essential programme of work planned for year 7 students and would encompass social and emotional aspects of learning. The school had previously tried teacher delivery during 40 minute lessons, but found that a lot of this time was unproductive, owing to student movement, recapping etc and had low impact.
Giant Impact was approached to devise a high impact ‘Learning to Learn’ programme which would deliver the material in circa 2½ hours within a collapsed timetable. Programmes would be delivered to half year groups in AM and PM sessions and in a style that would encourage communication, problem solving, team working and enterprise.
Anne believes that collapsed timetable events are a particularly good use of school time.
Multiple Intelligence and finding out how students are individually clever, is an important aspect of the ‘Learning to Learn’ programme and students undertake personal assessments to help them understand themselves. This is followed up with an online assessment which depicts graphically the individual’s learning preferences.
Through capturing individual student data the school has been able to identify the collective learning preferences, which in turn inform the teaching styles that best suit the students’ needs.
The school now has 2 year’s experience to compare and has embarked on a progressive statistical analysis. This will be monitored annually for significant movements and the results may be published next year.
Career, WRL & Enterprise has become a core strength within the school and St Michael’s believes there are significant student learning benefits to be gained through a planned investment in work related learning with all year groups.
The Senior Team at St Michael’s is fully committed to this planned approach to work related learning and sees real benefits from the consistency of approach.
St Michael’s RC School, Billingham, is a Specialist Science School with 900 students aged 11-16.
