Enterprise Work Related Learning : Case Study : Students Motivated With Money: St Michaels RC School

For the past two years St Michael’s has pioneered an imaginative rolling programme of career, work related learning and enterprise provision and is seeing noticeable improvements in students’ motivation as a result.

St Michael's RC SchoolYear 9 students have completed their AQA Preparation for Employment course work a year early and have been motivated to want to know more about the subject.

Last year as Year 8 (before the ‘Credit Crunch’) they experienced a Giant Impact ‘Making Money Count’ Programme which explained financial awareness in a simple and engaging way. Armed with this basic understanding and with reinforcement from teaching staff, students have been able to make more sense of the issues and have been interested in the developing national and global financial crisis.

Career, WRL & Enterprise has become a core strength within the school and St Michael’s believes there are significant student learning benefits to be gained through a planned investment in work related learning with all year groups.

Anne JonesAnne Jones, Head of Work Related Learning at St Michael’s, has devised a programme for each year group (Year 7 to Year 11) throughout the academic year, which is helping to embed the key work related learning messages and so better equip students for the world of work or further education.

Anne recently gained a Diploma in Careers Education from Nottingham Trent University and has been adapting leading edge thinking at her school for the past two years.

She is passionate about encouraging students to develop a positive attitude and believes this is the key to success. All Giant Impact programmes are designed to encourage this positive attitude and include communication, problem solving and team working elements as standard.

Anne believes that collapsed timetable events are a particularly good use of school time. The school has previously tried teacher delivery during 40 minute lessons, but found that a lot of this time was unproductive, owing to student movement, recapping etc... and in reality had less impact.

Giant Impact has been used to introduce, animate and reinforce key messages from the school, during an imaginative programme planned throughout 2008-2009.

The Senior Team at St Michael’s is fully committed to this planned approach to work related learning and sees real benefits from the consistency of approach.

St Michael’s RC School, Beamish Road, Billingham, Tees Valley, is a Specialist Science School with 900 students aged 11-16.
