Enterprise Work Related Learning : Outstanding School Tackles Enterprise

Wood Green Students Impress MP

Outstanding School Tackles EnterpriseStudents at the Wood Green High School College of Sport, Maths & Computing have recently experienced the thrills and excitement of running their own businesses. For the fifth consecutive year the school has selected Giant Impact to run a high energy enterprise event for all 230 year 10 students.

Recently cited by Ofsted as one of the top twelve outstanding schools in the country, Wood Green High School wants all its students to excel in their work experience placements and also be ready for the challenges of the real world of work.

The Giant Impact Key Skills at Work & Enterprise Programme is an important part of the Year 10 calendar. It brings business to life for students, by giving them the chance to develop life skills outside their normal curriculum and shows just how business can be fascinating, creative and fulfilling.

Outstanding School Tackles EnterpriseKaren Chatta, Head of Business Studies has seen the impact the programme has had on successive Year 10 students and comments: “Students quickly lose themselves in non-friendship groups and develop their communication, team building and problem solving skills through experiencing real life challenges. Most students displayed obvious enviable enterprise quailities and entrepreneurial flair”.

Whilst the programme was in full flow and students were busily making profit in a simulated business challenge, Headteacher Pank Patel, happened to be showing local Member of Parliament Adrian Bailey around the school. Mr Bailey was so impressed with the energy and engagement of the Wood Green students involved in the programme that he was going to share his experience with colleagues in Westminster.

Outstanding School Tackles EnterpriseMr Patel was delighted to see students so engaged and obviously enjoying ‘The Apprentice Experience’. “Students see reality TV programmes and are keen to test themselves, but the real learning is in communicating and co-operating with other people”.

The programme received a 98% satisfaction rating from students together with very positive comments about the impact the programme had had on them:

“Overall it was very good it improved my confidence by working with people outside of my friendship group”

“It was interesting and helped with communication and teamwork”

“They told me tips for the future, which I will use later in life”

Wood Green High School is a co-educational Comprehensive School and Specialist College of Sport, Maths & Computing for pupils aged 11 to 18 years.
